Are brakes covered under my warranty?

The peace of mind a warranty provides is one of the most attractive aspects of buying a new car (or a newer, low-mileage pre-owned car). In terms of warranties, there are many to choose from, but in terms of “are brakes covered under warranty?" it really depends on how old and how many miles the vehicle has.

What is the warranty coverage for brakes?

Generally, car warranties do not cover wear items like brake pads, rotors, shoes, and drums, however, a manufacturer may authorize a warranty repair if excessive wear is not detected upon inspection on a vehicle less than a year old. The warranty does not cover wear items, but it does cover many other brake components such as the brake booster, master cylinder, calipers, etc.

Warranties: What Do They Cover?

In new cars, factory warranties cover a variety of items, but they don't cover routine maintenance such as oil changes or wear items like brake pads. Some of the most common types of warranties are listed below to help you understand what they cover:

Manufacturer's Warranty - This warranty covers the entire vehicle from bumper to bumper, so it is often called a bumper-to-bumper warranty. Depending on the year, make, and model of your vehicle, a manufacturer's warranty is valid for a specific period of time or mileage. Most vehicle manufacturer warranties cover up to three years or 36,000 miles (whichever comes first), but some automakers, such as Hyundai, offer these warranties for up to five years or 60,000 miles, whatever comes first. Warranty coverage for all components and parts is included in bumper-to-bumper warranties. However, bumper-to-bumper warranties don't cover wear items. A manufacturer warranty or bumper-to-bumper warranty will not cover wear items like brake pads, rotors, shoes, and drums. It will however cover all other major components and parts of the brakes and brake system if they malfunction or break down due to manufacturer defect.

Powertrain Warranty - All of the components in a vehicle's powertrain are covered by a powertrain warranty. The brake system is typically not included, but it may include the engine, transmission, axles, driveshafts, transfer case, and more. Due to the fact that powertrain parts should last longer than bumper-to-bumper parts, a powertrain warranty is usually longer than a bumper-to-bumper warranty. With a factory powertrain warranty covering 10 years or 100,000 miles, KIA offers one of the longest warranties of any manufacturer.

Extended Warranty - Typically, you purchase an extended warranty after your basic or factory warranty expires. Roadside assistance and powertrain coverage may be included. Also, extended warranties do not generally cover normal wear and tear, like when brake pads wear out or when you need to replace the rotors. Nevertheless, an extended warranty may cover other brake repair needs, including master cylinders and disc brake calipers. In addition to the master cylinder, extended warranties may also cover the brake lines that connect the calipers to the master cylinder. Brakes are not covered by all warranty companies. And even the warranties that do cover brakes might have specific requirements regarding coverage. For example, if you are still covered by the manufacturer’s warranty on the parts the extended warranty company will recommend that you have the issue repaired at the dealer. Having problems with your brakes? Here's what you need to know.

To maintain the condition and safety of your vehicle, you should regularly check the brakes.

The majority of warranties don't include brake replacement unless they're necessary. Checking your brakes is easy thanks to the simple methods described in this article. Your brakes may need replacement if you notice one or more of the following signs:

  • When you apply the brakes, there is a screeching noise

  • When stopping, the brakes have to be applied more forcefully

  • When applying the brakes, the vehicle does not come to a complete stop

  • When applying pressure to the brakes, the vehicle pulls to one side

  • When applying the brakes and notice any strange vibrations

If you notice any of these signs, you may have faulty brakes that need repair. It is imperative to change brake pads regularly on your vehicle. Generally, your brakes should be checked at least once every six months.

Are you looking for a reliable extended warranty for your brakes?

Typically, brakes aren't covered by warranties because they naturally wear down over time. It is not expensive to replace brakes, and some people may be able to do this on their own. In order to keep your brakes in good working order, it is important to keep up with routine maintenance, including a brake pad and fluid inspection.
